DWELL

an iOS & Android app

Why this works

We didn’t invent any of this.

If this looks like a game, that’s fair. Here’s the honest answer.

Finding 1
You can’t feel yourself changing while it happens.
Finding 2
When you can see your progress, you keep going.

Dwell turns both into one plain sentence a day. Below is the thinking, with the studies it leans on. Then the part where we say what we don’t claim.

The thinking

Five plain ideas.

  1. I

    N° 01

    Why you can’t see it

    You can’t feel yourself growing.

Slow change is invisible from the inside. Each small gain becomes the new normal, so the ground you’ve covered stops registering. We’re quick to admit we changed years ago, slow to believe we’re still changing now.

  2. II

    N° 02

    Why a record helps

    Seeing progress keeps you going.

This is the steadiest finding behind the whole idea. A review of 138 randomized studies found that simply tracking progress made people meaningfully more likely to reach their goals. The effect was strongest when that progress was written down and reflected back.

  3. III

    N° 03

    Why failing still counts

It counts the effort, not the outcome.

You get credit for trying, including on the days it didn’t work. Meeting your setbacks with kindness instead of judgment lowers stress, and in careful experiments it makes people try harder next time. Shame does the opposite.

“The trying is the part that counts.”

  4. IV

    N° 04

    Why it isn’t a game

The number is a mirror, not a scoreboard.

When a reward becomes the reason you do a thing, it crowds out the reason you started. So the number only reflects what you actually did. No streaks. No leaderboard. No one to beat.

  5. V

    N° 05

    Why the looking back matters

Looking back is its own kind of good.

Going back over what you’ve done, laid out where you can see it, holds up across decades of work on reflection and life review. The looking back isn’t a feature bolted on. It’s the thing the app is for.

What we don’t claim

The honest part.

Dwell is not therapy, and it is not treatment.

It does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent anything. If a claim like that would matter to you, this is not that.

No study was ever run on this app. Everything on this page is research about the ideas underneath it, not proof about the thing in your pocket.

It will not fix a hard day.

And if you are genuinely struggling, please talk to a real person. A friend, a doctor, a counselor, a crisis line. An app is not a substitute for it.

We read the strong findings and the weak ones. Where the research was thin, or still argued over, we tried not to lean on it. The rest we built into something quiet you can actually use.
